NOISE IN THE WORKPLACE
Noise is omnipresent in the workplace and has serious and irreversible consequences on the health of workers. Today, more than 90% of workers exposed to noise risk irreversible hearing problems. Deafness is one of the most common occupational diseases. Custom hearing protection is an effective way to protect workers' hearing.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulation (EU) 2016/425
Lex,8h = the average daily sound exposure level expressed in dB(A)
Lp,c = the peak sound pressure level for intense and short noises expressed in dB(C)
When assessing the risk of noise in the workplace, the intensity of the noise and the time of exposure must be taken into account. The ears can be exposed to 80 decibels for 8 hours each day. An additional 3 decibels double the amount of acoustic energy, and therefore halve the exposure time. In industry, workers' ears are often exposed to sound intensities of 100 dB, which corresponds to a maximum exposure time of 5 minutes without suffering irreversible hearing damage!
European regulations protect workers exposed to noise in order to avoid damage to their health. From an average daily noise exposure of 80 dB, the employer must provide effective hearing protection for workers. The European legislation also provides measures in case certain thresholds are exceeded for intense and short noises. You can read more about the European Regulation on our blog.
Solutions exist to protect workers from noise!
The first objective to protect workers exposed to noise is always to reduce noise at the source. Then, it is essential to equip workers with appropriate and effective hearing protection. There are different hearing protection solutions: helmets, disposable foam plugs, custom made hearing protection... Custom made earplugs are the most effective and comfortable hearing protection.
